Bookkeeper/Accountant

Summary of Responsibilities

Performs a wide variety of diversified accounting assignments under the supervision of different professionals at various levels. Applies accounting knowledge in an appropriate manner for level and displays an ability to meet time constraints. When unusual problems arise, outlines them for the supervisor and seeks guidance on correct course of action.

 

Essential Functions

  • Understands the rules, regulations, and Code of Professional Conduct of the AICPA.
  • Attends and participates in professional education including in-house industry group meetings and in professionally sponsored training sessions.
  • Effectively communicates with clients, as instructed, to receive information necessary to complete the engagement with a minimum of disruption to clients.
  • Performs data processing for clients utilizing software provided.
  • Completes bookkeeping on basic accounting tasks utilizing client records.
  • Develops knowledge of software programs utilized by the firm.
  • Performs data processing functions including posting transactions and/or journal summaries, reconciling bank statements, spreading disbursement sheets, and reconciling credit card data.
  • Processes payroll reports, including maintaining selected employee payroll data, calculating payroll tax deposit requirements and preparing quarterly payroll tax reports.
  • Responds to federal and state notices received by clients to include file research, communication with IRS when necessary, or requested and preparing appropriate responses.
  • Prepares orderly workpapers in electronic format that document preparation processes.
  • Assists members of the tax/audit department with specific information needed from selected client files.
  • Performs such other duties as may be assigned by supervisory personnel in the tax/audit department.

 

Other Functions – Tax

  • Prepares simple personal tax returns using a computer software program.
  • Prepares property tax refund forms and payroll tax returns.
  • Makes adjusting entries and completes trial balances to prepare a tax return. Maintains a good understanding of depreciation and a depreciation computer software package to set up clients, and reads and understands depreciation reports.
  • Foots columns on accounting schedules and verifies their accuracy.
  • Reviews tax information submitted by client for completeness and meets with or calls clients with questions.

 

Other Functions – Audit

  • Enters trial balance data into audit software.
  • Submits electronic confirmations to third parties.

 

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Requires the ability to work overtime, as necessary, in order to meet client imposed and/or government mandated filing deadlines.
  • Requires the ability to meet the demands of a fast paced, deadline oriented environment.
  • Requires the ability to manage multiple and conflicting tasks requiring excellent organization and task prioritization skills.
  • Requires the ability to use diplomacy when interacting with co-workers, superiors and clients.
  • Requires the ability to remain sedentary; only occasional walking and standing are required.
  • The noise level in the office environment is moderate (office equipment, telephones, etc.)
  • Ability to occasionally travel locally to client job sites.

 

Education, Experience, and Skills Required

  • Minimum of two years responsible accounting or bookkeeping experience related to a computerized accounting system, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger through trial balance.
  • Ability to perform several tasks concurrently with ease and professionalism.
  • Minimum of 40 hours of continuing professional education is required each year.
  • Proficiency in use of computers and computer accounting and tax software programs.
  • Well-rounded knowledge of basic accounting principles.
  • Strong communication (written and oral), organizational and analytical skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in English.
